Monday Poker Headlines

Monday, October 18th, 2010

The Harrah’s combined bad beat jackpot survived the weekend and was sitting at just under $430,000 going into Monday’s play. The current minimum bad beat hand for the jackpot is quad fives and will drop to quad fours on Wednesday if the jackpot doesn’t hit.

The jackpot splits 50 percent of the money with all cash game players at any Harrah’s room — Harrah’s Resort, Caesars, Bally’s, Showboat — when it hits.

Meanwhile, Doyle Brunson has been having some fun with his Twitter account, conducting a series of polls about his fellow pros that have come up with some shocking results.

For example, the most hated poker player in the world — Phil Helmuth.

Who’d have thunk it?

And the female player most men would like to have sex with — Shannon Elizabeth.

Wow,  did not see that one coming.

OK, it’s not that shocking, but it’s still kind of fun.

Helmuth  actually beat out Russ Hamilton of the Ultimate Bet poker swindle and Tony G., front man for Party Poker.

Normally Helmuth would probably be pretty happy about this, except the actual category was “poker player you most want to kill,” so maybe not.

Brunson also asked his 355,000 Twitter followers the sex question and our personal favorite (guess who’s picture we decided to use), Shannon Elizabeth won, beating out Vanessa Rousso and Jennifer Tilly. Tilly, however, got a special nod for getting votes from both men and women.

Elizabeth replied “Uhm … thanks,” to Brunson

Rousso and Tilly then reportedly flirted with each other on Twitter so … well, we need a glass of water.

Among the guys on the sex thing, Gus Hansen came in first, followed by Patrik Antonius and Phil Ivey. Whatever.

And just to round things out, in the category of poker pros that fans would most like to hang out with, the winners were Phil Laak, Gavin Smith and Daniel Negreanu.

Elizabeth at Showboat, Harman in HOF

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

Atlantic City casino execs will tell you that one of the main reasons they offer poker (where the betting isn’t against the house) is that poker players might try their luck at other games. And actress and poker pro Shannon Elizabeth proved their point when she hit the blackjack tables at Showboat Friday.

Here’s some pics by our ace AC Weekly photo guys.

Looks like she’s having fun.

Meanwhile, one of the most accomplished female players in the world, Jennifer Harman, is going to be inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame according to Bluff Europe.

Harman has two WSOP bracelets (and not  in ladies events) and more than $2.2 million in tournament winnings. She’s also a pretty well rewarded cash game player.

She joins Barbara Enright, the only woman to reach the WSOP Main Event final table and the first woman to win a bracelet in an open event.

Also being inducted in September are Kathy Liebert and Billie Brown.

Liebert is the most successful female tournament player on the circuit, with her most recent win coming in the World Poker Finals for $75,000. She has tournament earnings topping the $5.7m mark.

Brown is being awarded posthumously – she was the first person to offer a tournament guarantee and is largely credited with making poker tournaments more exciting and accessible.

The induction ceremony is Sept. 3.

One of this blogs absolute favorites, actress and poker pro Shannon Elizabeth, was reportedly at the Showboat Friday night playing a little Blackjack, of all things.

Elizabeth’s appearance was actually more for one of the city’s competitors, Harrah’s Chester, where she helped call attention to the casino’s new 25-table World Series of Poker room.

“I do (appearances) whenever I can, whenever they ask me, especially anywhere where it’s a casino,” Elizabeth told the Daily Times of Delaware County Pa. “Casinos are kind of my second home right now. It’s fun, especially if I get to play.”

But according to reports, when she finished with her promotional appearance there, she booked over to the shore for some Atlantic City action. Elizabeth has made appearances at the Tropicana and other A.C. properties in the past.

And in a sort of strange story, a disgraced New Mexico stock broker is now playing poker to keep himself out of jail.

According to ABC News, Samuel McMaster Jr., who has admitted to 26 felony charges of securities fraud, struck a deal Aug. 4 with New Mexico authorities that could allow him to stay out of prison provided he can earn enough money playing in poker tournaments to repay the $444,000 he took from his more than 20 victims.

The 59-year-old still has to appear before a judge that may send him to jail, but as part of a plea agreement, McMaster’s lawyers said poker was his only source of income since he’s been banned from securities trading.

For the moment, McMaster has to come up with $7,500 a month. If he can prove that he can make the payments, it could effect his final sentencing. If he can’t, well it doesn’t look good.

Shannon Elizabeth on Team Lebanon

An interesting piece today in Poker News Daily quotes unnamed sources as saying that actress and poker player Shannon Elizabeth will be joining Team Lebanon in the World Team Poker competition at the Golden Nugget in Downtown Las Vegas on May 19. Elizabeth’s father is from Lebanon (She was born Shannon Elizabeth Fadal) making her eligible. Although she has said “I’m half Arabic, but I am 100 percent American,” in the past, the story points out that she probably couldn’t make Team USA. Still, she considers poker her “second career” and has become one of the most successful celebrity players.

This news, of course, has no Atlantic City angle whatsoever. But, hey, nice pics huh?
