Borgata Winter Open Starts Strong

The Borgata Winter Open is off to a strong start, but might be slightly off last year’s opening event numbers.

About 1,300 players were in the opening event, a $500 + $60 Deepstack tournament by about 3pm, but registration was still open. Last year’s winter open started with a $350 + $50 opener, drawing more than 1,500 players.

Maybe the extra $150 entry fee is to blame.

Actually, last year, event 2 was a $500 buy-in. This year, event 2 is the $350, so the casino just switched things up a little.

Anyway, with this type of turnout, the prize pool for the event easily makes the $300,000 gauranteed. In fact, it more than doubles it.

Final numbers aren’t in yet, however, so maybe they’ll catch last year.

Some name players were on hand including: Steve Dannenmann, Gordon Eng (who had three wins at the U.S.P.C. at The Taj in November), Manny Patel, Al Riccobono, Eric Siegel, Jason Young and 2002 WSOP main event champ Robert Varkonyi.
