NORTHFIELD — He has an acclaimed new album out that might just make him the superstar he’s been destined to become for years, and he’s playing a rare intimate show, featuring some of his new songs, to kick off his summer tour at Formica’s Bakery in Northfield Friday night (June 10) at 7pm.

Johnny Sansone, who’s new album The Lord Is Waiting and the Devil Is Too — released in April on Shortstack Records —  was recorded at Louisiana’s famed Dockside Studio, with Anders Osborne producing and playing guitar, as well as Galactic’s Stanton Moore on drums, has been hailed by the Louisiana Times-Picayune as an “early contender for record of the year.”

The album is also selling like hotcakes. It’s the third biggest seller at the Louisiana Music Factory, ahead of the New Orleans Jazz fest compilation.

The veteran singer-songwriter (with a voice similar to Randy Newman’s), harmonica master and accordionist grew up in New Jersey, but moved to Louisiana years ago. He was in the Atlantic City area in 2010 for a few well-received gigs and private house parties, including a benefit for the victims of last year’s BP oil disaster.

He begins his summer tour in Northfield of all places Friday night and there should be a packed house so get there early. Show starts at 7pm.

If you can’t make it to Formica’s, Sansone will be performing for free on two dates in August — at the Somers Point Beach Concert Series on Friday, Aug. 5 and at the Mardi Gras on the Boardwalk series in Atlantic City on Monday, Aug. 8.

Sansone tells AC Weekly, from the road, this morning: “I’ll be doing a very rare solo presentation of songs from the new CD, as well as songs from my other releases tonight. I’m so happy to be starting the summer tour in one of my favorite places, thanks to my good friend Carmen Marotta [who books and helps produce the Formica's series, as well as the Somers Point and Mardi Gras on the Boardwalk series].”

Sansone will have his new album for sale at Formica’s, but adds, “For those that can’t make it tonight the new CD is available from the store at johnnysansone.com.”
