SAG Award Surprises

Monday, January 30th, 2012

The SAG Awards last night are a truer Academy Award indicator than the Golden Globes. This means that George Clooney has serious competition in the best actor category after the major upset win for Jean Dujardin for The Artist.

Still, when the Oscars roll around, the entire Academy votes, the producers and directors as well as the actors, so Clooney is still my frontrunner for the Golden Boy. It is just that that the vote will be tighter.

It was also interesting that in the best actress category, the Viola vs. Meryl battle went to Viola. Some think that Meryl is due since despite all the nominations (17), she hasn’t won since Sophie’s Choice 29 years ago. Still, if Viola wins the Oscar, Meryl will be leading the cheering section for her good friend.

The wins in supporting roles for Christopher Plummer and Octavia Spencer confirm that they are locks to repeat their wins on Oscar night, and the ensemble victory for The Help has bumped that film up into favorite territory along with The Artist. The Descendants must now be seen as the third choice.
