Earlier this summer Atlantic City Weekly shined the spotlight on several local athletes playing baseball professionally, with a particular focus on phenom Mike Trout, who was called up by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and made his Major League debut while still a teenager (he turned 20 Aug. 7).

Lately another area standout will get his chance to shine on one of sports highest stages this fall. Atlantic City native Jack Corcoran was signed to a three-year contract to play football for the San Francisco 49ers earlier this month. San Fran is Corcoran’s third NFL team since he graduated from Rutgers University in 2009, as he signed with the Houston Texans as an un-drafted free agent in 2010, then joined the Tennessee Titans’ practice squad after the Texans released him. The Titans also cut Corcoran loose last season, but the 49ers liked what they saw in the 6-foot-1, 235-pound former two-sport high school standout and signed him to a three-year deal.

Now 24, Corcoran gaining 3,683 career yards and scored 70 touchdowns as a bruising fullback for St. Joseph’s High School of Hammonton. He also excelled on the wrestling mat, winning the state 215-pound  title at Boardwalk Hall as a senior. He went on to play football in his hometown state for Rutgers and was utilized primarily as a blocking back and receiver out of the backfield. Corcoran was a three-year starting fullback in college, helping the Scarlet Knights qualify for a bowl game every year he started.

The 49ers are scheduled to play the Philadelphia Eagles in Philly on Sunday, Oct. 2, at 1pm.
