ATLANTIC CITY — Phillips Seafood, the Chesapeake Bay-based company that has had an Atlantic City location on the third floor of The Pier Shops at Caesars since it first opened, had a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday to celebrate its latest venture, Empire Burger, located on the Boardwalk in front of The Pier Shops.

“In a way this is a new concept for us, but in a way it’s not a new concept, it’s just an expansion of the old,” says Larry McAllister, director of operations for Phillips Foods. “We’ve taken the same seafood that’s been so successful for Phillips over the years — the same crab cakes, shrimp, tuna and seafood that we’ve loved — and kind of added a carnivore’s  twist with burgers, hot dogs, chicken, some smoothies — the kinds of things that will make it a little more friendly to all the people of Atlantic City”

“First of all let me just say thank you so much to the entire Phillips family for believing in Atlantic City, and demonstrating in a meaningful kind of way your commitment to being part of the great success story that is the city of Atlantic City,” says A.C. Mayor Lorenzo Langford, who was in attendance along with John Rilsey of Atlantic County Board of Chosen Freeholders, Phillips renowned chef Paul Drew, and other dignitaries. “Our comeback has not just begun, we’re well on our way to reaching higher heights, and this is another reason for people to come and Do AC!”

BRIGANTINE, N.J. — The 2012 edition of the Brigantine Polar Bear Plunge promises to be the largest in the 12-year history of the New Year’s Day event, with hundreds of swimmers, thousands of spectators and over 130 sponsors on board.

The Polar Bears’ goal for this year is to raise over $50,000 for the Fisher House Foundation — a charity that provides housing and transportation to wounded military members and their families. Last year’s plunge raised over $32,000 for Fisher House.

This year’s edition of the Brigantine Polar Bear Plunge kicks-off at 11am New Year’s Day at the north-end seawall with live music, refreshments, color guard and merchandise for sale. The plunge itself goes off at noon. “Atlantic City’s Singing Lifeguard” Jim Craine (right) will serve as the master of ceremonies, and has the honor of singing the National Anthem at the event. Phillip’s Seafood will provide complimentary soup throughout the festivities. 40669_108228045898185_100001329708009_56211_3703311_n

The plunge, which is free and open to the public, has become a popular tradition with both locals and visitors to Brigantine. Participants are encouraged to wear costumes and the best costume will be awarded a prize. The noon swim is followed by a post-plunge party at the Rod ‘n’ Reel Tavern nearby about a block away. There will be live entertainment furnished by the fabulous Mott’s Creek Pickers. Food and drinks will be available for sale.

The Brigantine Polar Bear Plunge raises funds through sweatshirt and calendar sales, sponsorships and contributions at the event. This year over 130 businesses and individuals are sponsoring the event, and names of participating sponsors appear on the merchandise. The plunge, which started out as a dare between friends to jump in the frigid Atlantic Ocean, is presented by a small group of dedicated volunteers.
