Is Hotel/Water Park in A.C.’s Future?

ATLANTIC CITY — Real-estate developer Tom Sherwood Sr., principal of TWS Enterprises, Ltd., announced during a May 16 press conference tentative plans to construct a 183-roon hotel adjoining an indoor, year-round water park at a vacant seven-acre tract he owns at Huron Avenue and Marina Boulevard in Atlantic City’s marina district. Architectural plans are in place, and the project is pending presentation/approval by the Atlantic City Planning Board at an unspecified date.

The property is located across Huron Avenue from the Borgata. Sherwood and his business associates purchased the land for $4.4 million in 2007 — roughly two years after purchasing the 55,000-square foot Club Tru complex across town, and turning it into what is now the Diving Horse Cabaret and Steakhouse following a year-long, multi-million-dollar renovation.

The initial plan was to construct what would have become the fourth marina-district casino-hotel (joining the Borgata, Harrah’s and the Golden Nugget) on the empty tract, but the economic downturn halted plans and the land remained vacant. Revised plans to construct the water park and hotel would be more in keeping with Atlantic City’s long-term goal of becoming a more diversified, year-round destination, it was revealed at the press event.

Architectural renderings show the proposed development to be 31 stories and 350-feet tall, and designed to resemble a ship’s sail. The total cost of the project is in the realm of $123 million. If approved, the development would be called the Diving Horse Resort and Water Park. More information will be forthcoming as details are revealed.
