ATLANTIC CITY — On Wednesday, June 15, five people competed at Bally’s Dennis Courtyard on the AC Boardwalk to see who could keep two bare body parts on a six-foot block of ice the longest, with the winner taking home $500.

Contestants were selected by Cat Country 107.3 FM radio, which also broadcast the event, and NBC-TV 40 meteorologist Rick DeLuca served as a judge. The event was held in conjunction with Bally’s “Beat the Heat” promo running through July 4.

After two hours and 30 minutes, contestant Dan Kirwin of North
Wildwood relinquished. The contest pushed on for almost another hour until the final four contestants decided to split the prize and warm up. Samantha Stuart of EHT, Shaun Churchill of Estell Manor, Anthony Jarno of Forked River and Larry Reid of EHT each received $125 for conquering the “Ice Block” and learning an unique way to “Beat the Heat.”

The Beat the Heat promo is triggered any day the temperature outside exceeds 72 degrees through July 4. The first 1,000 people who insert their Total Rewards Players Card into a slot machine after the “official” temperature is read at 3pm will receive $1 in free slot play for every incremental degree, minimum of $5 per guest.

Country Cares for St. Jude Kids founder Randy Owen enjoys some time with the patients of St. Jude during the 2011 Country Cares Radio Seminar.

Cat Country 107.3 FM will host its 12th annual Country Cares for St. Jude Kids Radiothon on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 24-25, from 6am-9pm each day at the Hamilton Mall in Mays Landing.

Cat Country will broadcast live from the mall during the two-day event to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The radiothon will feature non-stop music, activities and entertainment, touching testimony and appeals for support from St. Jude patients, parents, staff and celebrity endorsements from music entertainers.

Monies raised by the 32-hour radiothon will go to support St. Jude’s lifesaving work. St. Jude relies primarily on the public’s generosity to support its mission to find cures and save children with cancer and other deadly diseases. It costs $1.6 million to operate the hospital every day, and more than 70 percent of that funding comes from the public through programs like Country Cares for St. Jude Kids. St. Jude is the only children’s cancer research hospital where no child is ever denied treatment because of a family’s inability to pay. St. Jude covers the cost of food, travel and lodging for patients and a family member.
