Acclaimed area musician Lew London will be performing for the U.S. Troops in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Thursday through Sunday, Dec. 15-18.

London had recently returned from performing with Scott Kirby, Peter Mayer and Jim Mayer — members of Jimmy Buffett’s band — at the Parrothead Convention in Key West, Florida, and received an invite from Kirby to perform for the troops.

London has performed in southern New Jersey for over 40 years. In the early part of his music career,  he was a member of a popular bluegrass band called the Bottle Hill Boys, and more recently he’s been a longtime member of the Bubba Mac Blues Band based in Ocean City. A multi-instrumentalist (guitar, banjo and fiddle), London was nominated in the Best Traditional Folk Album category for a 2010 Grammy award as a contributor to the 2009 CD A Tribute to Utah Phillips, which also featured such renowned musicians as Ani Difranco, Pete Seeger, Emmylou Harris and others.

In a media release, London said that he’s particularly looking forward to performing for the troops since they are away from home during the holidays. He is also looking forward to sharing his experience with his students upon his return,  expressing how fortunate we are to live in a country with so much freedom, and pointing out the importance of sharing one’s talents with others.

London teaches audio technology at the ChARTer~TECH High School for the Performing Arts in Somers Point. As well as being a teacher and professional musician, London has mixed and engineered hundreds of recordings and has over 30 years of professional experience in the studio on both sides of the microphone.
