Tropicana $25 Million Renovation Planned

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012

ATLANTIC CITY — The newly named CEO of Tropicana, Tony Rodio, said earlier today that his Atlantic City property, which opened in 1981, is slated for some big changes this year.

The plans in the announced $25 million renovation project, according to Rodio, include 16 floors of the casino-hotel’s north tower, encompassing 437 rooms and suites. New furniture, carpeting, textured wall coverings and modernized bathrooms are planned.

According to the Associated Press, the renovation work will begin after the summer season and is  expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The addition of 150 new slot machines, a new Italian restaurant, and the expansion of Tango’s Lounge (with 30 additional seats and a bigger dance floor) are also part of the project.

These improvements are close to the Tropicana’s new Boogie Nights dance club, which debuted two weeks ago, and also includes a Boogie Nights-themed party pit for gamblers outside its doors.

Between 25 to 30 permanent jobs, as well as more than 100 temporary construction jobs, are expected to be created in relation to the project.

“It’s a testament to our commitment to Atlantic City and to this property,” says Rodio. “We think this place has a lot of upside.”

Running of the Leprechauns at the Trop

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

cmsATLANTIC CITY — The luck of the Irish stormed in from the Boardwalk and swept through the Tropicana last Saturday night, March 3. To mark the start of the Irish holiday, at least 100 fun-loving St. Paddy’s day revelers decked out in green-themed outfits, hats and face paint gathered for the rambunctious and festive Running of the Leprechauns pub crawl.

Joe and Scott from WZXL 100.7-FM hosted the event,  of which a portion of proceeds went to the Ellie Koerner Leukemia Foundation.

The “race” was led by the famed Hooters girls, Boogie Nights characters and the renowned Boogie Beaver — who was seen dancing and having his picture taken with partakers. Throughout the night the leprechauns enjoyed food and drink specials all through the casino for this special annual event.

Participating leprechauns congregated in the marketplace with festive Irish chants that built up to the massive run that surprised and entertained guests and spectators both inside the hotel and on the Boardwalk.

“Whoever thought drunken guys only come out in the summer …  lied,” said Mattie Dunn, a highly entertained bystander.  — Josh Kinney

Party Like It’s 1999

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

acw-1999Partying like its 1999 has a lot of appeal and we have to hand it to The Pool at Harrah’s for coming up with the idea of a back to the 90s party Thursday (March 4). Pop in a Backstreet Boys CD, bring your Pokemon cards and laugh off the Y2K bug that freaked us out and then fizzled out.

But where we really have to give Harrah’s props is their choice of the ultimate ‘90s icon. Yes, it’s the dancing baby, first made famous on Ally McBeal and then popping up pretty much everywhere. Nothing says end of the Clinton era more than the dancing baby. So put on your cargo pants, tickle an Elmo and dance with the baby here and then again at The Pool.

The 1999 party at The Pool is brought to you by Dave Pena, the creator of Boogie Nights ‘70s and ‘80s Dance Club and Planet Rose Karaoke Lounge. The party will turn back the clock to celebrate the final decade of the 20th century — the heyday of Bill Clinton, Pam Anderson, Marky Mark in his Calvins, Biggie Smalls, Nirvana, Titanic, Ricky Martin, N’Sync, Cindy Crawford, Beavis and Butthead, Marilyn Manson, the original 90210, Minnie Me, the OJ trial, Arsenio Hall, and so much more. Pena aims to pull out all the stops to create a memorable and exciting salute to the nineties.
“I loved the nineties, and now that its 2010 we can look back with some sense of nostalgia for all the crazy things that happened and all the music we loved back then.” But as for what we can expect, Pena is being deliberately hush-hush. “I want to keep a lot of what’s planned for the 1999 party a secret so that it’s a real surprise for people when they come through the door. But one thing I can tell you is that it’s time to raise your gin and juice, and do the Urkel Dance while a sexy schoolgirl hits you baby one more time.”

Resorts to introduce “Retro Blackjack”

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

blackjackThe casino-hotel that brought “boogie” back with the ultimate ’70s and ’80s dance club Boogie Nights is set to turn back the clock again with Retro Blackjack!
Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City recently announced that it will debut Retro Blackjack in February. These table games will offer minimum “retro” wagers starting at $2 per hand, plus a 25-cent “fee” per hand.peace
“Many players are looking to expand their casino experience by playing blackjack, but are intimidated to do so,” says Kevin Brown, Resorts executive director of table games, in a release to the media. “Retro Blackjack gives them an opportunity to become familiar with the game while playing with others who have a similar skill level.
“With the incredible successes we have had with our retro dance club the past two years, and with the coin-operated slots last year, it was natural for us to take the retro theme to table games,” adds Brown. “These games will certainly add additional buzz to an already exciting casino floor.”
Retro Blackjack will debut for a limited time on two table games at Resorts. Wagers will begin at $2, and wagers can be made in one-dollar increments up to $5. Wagers after $5 will be made in $5 increments. Players placing a wager between $2 and $5 will be required to place a 25-cent fee when placing their bet. The 25-cent fee will be taken by the dealer prior to any cards being dealt. All rules and regulations for standard blackjack will be the same for Retro Blackjack.

Jerry Garcia

The late Grateful Dead leader Jerry Garcia would have been 67 this Saturday, Aug. 1. In honor of the music icon’s birthday, there are two special celebrations going on in the Atlantic City area this weekend. And one, which starts tonight, is free!

Beginning at 7pm on Saturday, Aug. 1, at McCullough’s Emerald Links in EHT, the Tony Mart’s Rock ‘N’ Roots Jamfest will include headlining act (and long-time Grateful Dead vocalist) Donna Jean Godchaux and her band doing Dead tunes and more.

The Ryders

Also on the bill is The Ryders, a group that plays original music typically, but for this occasion will perform a tribute to Bob Dylan and the Band — and the Dead.

For the most part, the Ryders will play Dylan tunes that the Dead or Jerry covered at some point.

Meanwhile, beginning tonight (July 31) and running through Saturday, Aug. 1, with a late viewing from 9pm-midnight, Resorts in Atlantic City will host the exhibit “Jerry Garcia: A Visual Journey.” On display will be  Jerry Garcia’s artwork, featuring “one of the largest collections of original drawings, watercolors, etchings, hand-signed lithographs, and early print proofs never publicly displayed before.”
"Garcia-Grisman" by Garcia
