Grammy Moment: Bob Dylan Backed By Strings

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

At just about the last minute, the Grammy folks announced that Bob Dylan would be performing at this past Sunday’s Grammy Awards show — televised on CBS, Feb. 13 — in a set that would include “new folkies” Mumford & Sons and the Avett Brothers.

Along with Dylan, the other acts tore the roof off the joint and as of early this morning, Mumford & Sons were among the most searched phrases on Twitter.

But after about five minutes of hearing Mumford & Sons and the Avetts doing their modern take on acoustic folk-rock, Bob Dylan took to the stage backed by key members of his touring band on bass, guitars, and other stringed instruments. Eventually there was a line of stringed instruments backing Dylan in a sight never seen before … let alone on stage at the Grammys.

As you will see in the clip above, Dylan sang “Maggie’s Farm,” which seemed like a tip of the Stetson to the new independent wave of musicians who have shunned the traditional music industry models and have set out on their own respective courses, and not working “on Maggie’s Farm no more.”

On a local note, Pleasantiville native and superstar producer Rodney Jerkins co-hosted a Grammy after party with Moby. Click here for more information about their New Music Seminar.
