Following Tuesday’s coastal flood watch for the Jersey shore by the National Weather Service, a nor’easter that is headed to the Northeast coast of the U.S. may bring less wind and rainfall (on land, because the storm is expected to move farther out to sea) than expected as it hits a region reeling from Hurricane (and Superstorm) Sandy.
Forecasters Wednesday morning said the storm could bring some winter precipitation with it.
With many in New York and New Jersey still without power or heat in the aftermath of Sandy and temperatures below freezing Tuesday night in South Jersey, officials, such as New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, urges victims of Sandy t take advantage of the shelters that are available.

Linda Gilmore, public information officer for Atlantic County, provided the following update from the National Weather Service as of 1:30pm today:
• A strong coastal Nor’easter will threaten the region in the November 7th-8th timeframe.
• Storm force wind gusts (55-65 mph) are likely during this storm.
• Moderate coastal flooding is likely during this storm, major coastal flooding is possible; the high tides of most concern are the ones around midday Wednesday, November 7th and the following high tide Wednesday night.
• There will be moderate to severe beach erosion during this event.
• This nor’easter will have greater impact than usual because of the serious impacts from Coastal Storm Sandy.
• There is a threat of wintry precipitation in northwest New Jersey & the Poconos.
County officials are urging residents of Atlantic County to “replenish storm supplies, such as flashlights, batteries, medications, non-perishable food, baby and pet supplies, etc. in the event that strong winds and rain result in power outages.”

At 70, Aretha Franklin can still belt it out with the best of them. As she proved on Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, her voice is still superb, her sense of humor still intact and her music can still move mountains.
Playing to a large crowd in a rare Fall 2012 concert appearance, Franklin, in a shimmering silver gown and looking beautiful, and her large band pulled out several Atlantic Records classic cuts ( “Chain of Fools,” “Share Your Love with Me,” “I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)” and, of course, “Respect”).
Franklin also tickled the ivories a bit. Behind the piano, she sang a heartfelt tribute to the late Whitney Houston, singing her hit “I Will Always Love You,” while images of Whitney played on video screens.
Franklin also played tribute to the late great James Moody, singing a zippy version of “Moody’s Mood for Love.”
One of the most memorable numbers of the night was Franklin’s take on Curtis Mayfield’s (a “gentle giant,” Franklin offered to the crowd) “Something He Can Feel,” which the late Mayfield wrote for Franklin’s 1978 film Sparkle.

Following the concert, which lasted close to an hour and a half, with Franklin taking a brief break during the midway point as the band played on, the Queen of Soul herself graciously took some time for a meet and greet with a lucky few backstage (see photo above). The Showroom in the Golden Nugget Atlantic City will host the event beginning 12:30pm on Sunday, Oct. 14.
Atlantic City filmmaker Keith Vaile’s Azrael will kick off the fright fest, a local film about the angel of death.
Another South Jersey film, Ticket to Hell, will follow, written by Ed McKeever and Kevin Orosz. The premise of this alarming adventure directed by Evelle Mitchell follows two horror fanatics from Jersey that use their lottery winnings to hire their favorite late night horror host to appear in a new documentary. Things turn hellish on this journey through South Jersey’s Pine Barrens and the infamous Ten Acres, starring Orosz, Jeremy Sless, and Ryan Loughney.
The world premiere of The Meat Puppet, directed by Joe Valenti and written by and starring Keith Collins, will act as the finale of the event. The film’s focus is Andrew “Drew” Shelton – a handsome, wealthy playboy with a voracious craving for human flesh. His favorite dish is beautiful women, whom he kills, prepares, and cooks to perfection. Unbeknownst to his guests, the lavish dinner parties he throws are catered by his latest victim, and also the forum for who will be the next dish du jour. The intensity increases with a cat and mouse game between Drew and a suspicious detective who has a hunch something isn’t right. The question arises if the cold-blooded killer is really who he seems to be, or if he’s just the Meat Puppet for an even more sadistic mastermind. Collins expressed the individuality of the psychological thriller, saying his piece is “the kind of horror movie that you don’t see anymore – it’s a great story with great characters.” The Meat Puppet is sure to satisfy its audience’s appetite for horror.
Tickets are $5 for a single show, $10 for the trio. Prefacing the three films will be a block of shorts beginning at 11am.
