PokerStars Bid to Buy Atlantic Club Not Looking Good

Thursday, May 2nd, 2013

This week, following a report by the Wall Street Journal, the national media has been reporting that the deal that would have had the parent company of the online gaming giant PokerStars buying Atlantic City’s Atlantic Club is likely off as the deadline for the transaction has expired.

It looks like the Atlantic Club will stay the Atlantic Club this summer.

Its owner, Colony Capital LLC, changed the name of the former Atlantic City Hilton to the Atlantic Club Casino & Hotel in early 2012.

Scott Kirby Recording New Album in Somers Point

Thursday, December 6th, 2012

The bay-side town of Somers Point, N.J., about 15 minutes outside of Atlantic City and across the bridge from Ocean City, is where “beach folk” musician  Scott Kirby (pictured above) is currently recording his seventh solo record.

Kirby, according to his bio, is “one of the most requested artists” on Sirius XM Radio Margaritaville.

Kirby has played with Jimmy Buffett and is often compared to him; he is also good friends with guitarist Peter Mayer of the Coral Reefer Band. However, these recording sessions are not connected to Buffett’s Margaritaville brand coming to Resorts Atlantic City in 2013.

Kirby, who’s new CD is called Sol Searching, chose to come up from Key West to record  at the chARTer-TECH High School for the Performing Arts (on Route 9 in Somers Point) for a few very good reasons.

In a statement released Tuesday evening (Dec. 5), Kirby says:

You may be wondering why I left the sunny, warm climate of Key West to come to New Jersey in December?  Good question!

Lew London [pictured below], a long time friend and brilliant singer/songwriter, multiple-instrumentalist, recording engineer and producer lives here on the Jersey Shore and teaches music and recording at Charter Tech High School for the Performing Arts in Somers Point, New Jersey.

Peter Mayer and I spoke to the students there in September and had a chance to check out the great recording studio at the school as well.

lew_londonLew and I have been talking about doing a project together for a while, and getting the opportunity to record in such an excellent facility with Lew while giving some of the students access to the project seemed like a win-win for everyone.

Lew has done just about everything in his three decades in the music business. He performed, co-wrote and recorded with the legendary Steve Goodman for years, he was nominated for a Grammy in 2009 for his work on the Utah Phillips tribute CD and was named Guitar Player of the Year by Guitar Player Magazine. Not to mention he plays a mean fiddle!!

With students and local musicians — as well as Nashville guitarist Michael McAdam — Kirby and London have been recording the album over the past week and will wrap up in the next week or two.

Half of the songs have already been recorded.

Visit Kirby’s Web site for more on the artist.

People, the Atlantic City Boardwalk Didn’t Get Destroyed by Sandy

Tuesday, November 27th, 2012

feet-boardwalkIn Atlantic City and the surrounding areas, it’s well known that the Atlantic City Boardwalk was NOT destroyed by Hurricane Sandy.

However, as the Atlantic City Alliance has found out, according to one North Jersey blog:

“A whopping 41 percent of the American public believes the Atlantic City Boardwalk is destroyed, when actually it was just a useless, dilapidated section of planks near the inlet that washed away.”

How is this possible?

According to the blog post, “The Atlantic City Alliance says it will fight back, including with a full-page ad in the New York Times on Wednesday [Nov. 28] – the group’s first ad with a national reach.”

The ACA also has a new TV spot that will air beginning this week in the New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Baltimore regions.

“It’s a shame that sloppy and lazy reporting by major outlets created this sort of problem,” the blog post goes on.

What’s even more of a shame is that some people — some of them reporters and editors — either don’t listen, don’t want to hear the truth or a combination of both.

This video alone, filmed five days after Sandy, shows the Atlantic City Boardwalk intact.

So does this one, a “Board-Walk,” attended by hundreds to show the world the historic Boardwalk was not destroyed by Sandy.

So does the pic below:

Friday, November 9th, 2012

Last Saturday, Nov. 3, NBC’s Saturday Night Live had a little fun with the flap between New Jersey Gov.Chris Christie and Atlantic City Mayor Lorenzo Langford in relation to evacuation orders for Atlantic City due to Hurricane Sandy last month.

The Christie bit comes at about the 2:17 time mark of video below.

Langford was mentioned in the skit.

On the (still standing) Atlantic City Boardwalk on Friday, Nov. 9, Langford, at a press event to thank first responders during the Sandy crisis in the resort, said he got a kick out of the skit and thanked SNL for putting his name in front of a national audience.

Photos, Review and More from Ronnie Wood’s ‘Golden’ Weekend in Atlantic City

Tuesday, April 24th, 2012

He’ll turn 65 June 1, but legendary rocker Ron Wood is feeling young.

He’s got a hit radio show, just got inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the second time, and played one sensational concert at the Golden Nugget in Atlantic City on Saturday, April 21.

Oh, and Woody has a new art exhibition “Faces, Time and Places,” running through July in New York, with a satellite gallery — featuring the Rolling Stones’ member’s originals and prints — just opened at the Golden Nugget in Atlantic City.

The one-off Atlantic City showed Woody to be in top form, prancing around the stage in a high-energy show that last about two hours. He played guitar and sang, as well as slide guitar and harmonica.

Following Wood and friends’  “Golden” weekend in Atlantic City, it’s gonna be a big weekend this weekend for the Nugget, too.
