On Sunday, Aug. 22, the Gold Foundation hosted its sixth annual Margate Rock Festival, a free summer blockbuster concert presented by Harrah’s Entertainment. The live concert featured The Hooters, whose show was followed by a fireworks display over the Margate bayfront sponsored by Tomatoe’s Restaurant.
The Hooters hit the club scene in 1980 and skyrocketed to national prominence with hit songs like “Day By Day,” “And We Danced,” “Where do the Children Go,” “All You Zombies,” “Hanging on a Heartbeat,” “Can’t Get Blood from a Stone” and others. Original band members Eric Bazilian, Rob Hyman and Dave Uosikkinen were later joined by Fran Smith and John Lilley, and that combination has remained intact for over 20 years.

If You’re Not Guy Fieri-ed Out By Now…

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

The Village Voice blog has an insightful post today on the New York Times “excellent piece” on Guy Fieri’s recent appearance at Caesars during the Atlantic City Food & Wine Festival.

Here’s the NY Times story. It’s called “Guy Fieri, Chef-Dude, Is in the House.”

Worth the read.

Review: Nas and Damian Marley

Atlantic City Weekly summer intern Velv Somersault went to the Nas and Damian Marley concert at the House of Blues at Showboat last Thursday and filed this review. Read entire review at acweekly.com:

Upon arrival at the Nas and Damian Marley show last Thursday (July 29) at the House of Blues at Showboat in Atlantic City, the line of concert goers was enormous and venue security was tight.

While waiting in the Music Hall for the show to start, I overheard a few conversations about people being a bit weary of how the concert was going turn out. I thought to myself that they must not have heard the duo’s album, Distant Relatives, which dropped this past May.

It’s a phenomenal album and I just knew that they had to bring that energy across in a live performance.

DJ Greenlantern made an entrance, getting ready for the show. The set he spun was a dope mix of hip-hop and reggae classics. He knew just how to hold off the crowd as we all anxiously waited for the headlining act. He played an a capella version of Notorious B.I.G.’s “Juicy” and the whole crowd recited along in unison.

The Lady, The Lips and The Diddy in Atlantic City

What an action packed holiday weekend in the Atlantic City area.

With some of the biggest names in the music industry in Atlantic City —  Lady Gaga, Diddy and the Flaming Lips among them — you just knew that it wouldn’t be your typical July 4 weekend at the Jersey Shore.

Aside from all of the trouble that ensued at Harrah’s Resort, which led to the cancellation of the Diddy show, it appeared as though the weekend went off without too many hitches.

V: Vaudeville Style Variety at Trump Plaza

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

VBased in Las Vegas, V: The Ultimate Variety Show, has come east for a summer run at Trump Plaza now to Sept. 5.

The show is a wonderful, old school collection of variety acts, the kind of show that for longtime Atlantic City residents harks back to the golden era of the Steel Pier. The Music Hall Theater at the Pier presented unicyclists, puppeteers and knife throwers, and the headliner for a 15-minute set might be a 14-year-old up and comer named Stevie Wonder or the Supremes (you paid an extra quarters to set in the first 25 rows, I kid you not!).

Anyway, V show features a terrific magician who does magical things with yellow doves, Jason Byrne; a very funny MC/juggler Michael Holly; a Russian dance team, Pasha & Aliona who make the world’s fastest costume changes and America’s Got Talent winner Bianca Ryan.

Best of all it features the fabulous ventriloquist Ronn Lucas, who has graced numerous Atlantic City show stages. His act is absolutely fabulous. For information on the show go here.

Did you know that last Saturday night at the Bayside Resort in West Atlantic City, hip-hop’s Jadakiss did a 20-minute set with opener Apollo, 20, who did a few songs of his own as well?

Our eager intern Velv S. attended the show, which was also to include Juelz Santana — he didn’t show — and has reviewed the concert for Atlantic City Weekly. Check it 0ut.

Adam Lambert at Borgata

Adam Lambert

Adam Lambert was outrageous in a PG-13 way while making his Atlantic City headliner debut last night at the Borgata’s Event Center.
