Conan O’Brien to Play The Borgata May 30

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

acw-conanConan O’Brien has announced the dates for his Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour and Atlantic City has made the cut.

O’Brien will be at The Borgata Event Center on May 30. Tickets are priced at $155, $125 and $95 according to The Borgata’s Website, though tickets in other cities start at $39.50.

Other stops are at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby Pa. on June 7 and Radio City Music Hall in New York June 1 and 2.

O’Brien, who of course was controversially bounced from his Tonight Show gig earlier this year, bills the 30-city tour as “a night of music, comedy, hugging, and the occasional awkward silence.”

He also tweeted “Hey Internet: I’m headed to your town on a half-assed comedy & music tour. Go to www.teamcoco.com for tix. I repeat: It’s half-assed.”

The tour begins April 12 in Eugene Ore.

‘Jersey Shore’ The Movie, But Not In Sea Isle

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

acw-jerseyshoreFans of MTV’s Jersey Shore are a little sad to the see the show air its season finale tonight (Jan. 21) (though a lot of Jersey Shore residents are probably glad to see the controversial show go), but The Late, Late Show With Craig Ferguson has the perfect remedy. The show will air a pretty hysterical trailer for the fictional Jersey Shore: The Movie tonight (tomorrow morning, whatever). Entertainment Weekly scored an early look at the bit, which stars Mila Kunis, Nick Lachey, Tom Lennon and Super Mario (Ferguson).
Seaside Heights in Ocean County, where the show is set, may be a little removed from the A.C. area, but it’s not that far. After all, the cast made a trip to The Quarter’s Providence nightclub in last week’s episode and cast members will be appearing Feb. 13 at the Taj Mahal’s Casbah.
Besides, it’s just too funny, though slightly NSFW. Go here to see the clip.

And in a strange coincidence, Sea Isle City officials  issued  a press release today saying the city is not in talks to be the host of the next season of Jersey Shore. Apparently there is a rumor floating around that the Cape May County town is up next for the show. Sea Isle Mayor Leonard C. Desiderio says, “We have not been contacted about the show Jersey Shore filming in Sea Isle. This is an unsubstantiated rumor and in fact, we understand the show is returning to Seaside Heights for the next season. My staff and I are in communication with MTV to clear up this matter and ensure the media is provided with accurate information.”

ZXL’s “Man Cave” Party at Hard Rock Café

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

MancaveFrom now through the night it happens — Friday, Dec. 11 — radio station WZXL 100.7 will give away tickets to an exclusive event that will inspire all southern New Jersey men to “never let the dream die.”
Station listeners can win tickets to a party at the Hard Rock Café, inside Trump Taj Mahal, that will include live music, free appetizers, free commemorative T-shirts and, best of all, a chance to win the ZXL Ultimate Man Cave.

The Man Cave is comprised of five recliners embossed with mens’ favorite NFL team logos, a 42-inch flatscreen TV, a foosball table, a Fender acoustic guitar autographed by Vince Neil of Motley Crue and Vinnie Paul of Pantera, an official NASCAR hood, a freezer full of meat, a VIP party package to Bare Exposure gentleman’s club, a Heineken-Krups BeerTender, bar glassware, neon signs and more.

The party starts at 7pm, and kicking off the music will be the high-energy, hard-guitar playing of Matt Portella. “I consider myself an entertainer, not just a singer or guitar player,” says Portella on his Web site. “I like to keep things rockin’ and everyone happy — or at least that’s my goal.”

The multi-talented foursome Screaming Broccoli will rock the party starting around 8pm. Between sets, ZXL will support the campaign with buttons and rally posters declaring, “Save the Man Cave!” and will feature interactive play stations to entertain listeners.

Rest In Peace, Soupy Sales

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

soupySoupy Sales, one of the nation’s most beloved comedians who performed extensively in Atlantic City and the southern New Jersey area throughout his career, passed away Thursday, Oct. 22, in a New York City hospital. He was 83 years old.
Born Milton Supman in Franklinton, N.C., on Jan. 28, 1926, Sales began his comedy career doing children’s television programs in the 1950s. His surname was so often mispronounced as “Soupman” that his parents jokingly nicknamed his brothers “Hambone” and “Chickenbone,” and him as “Soupbone,” which was eventually shortened to Soupy. He was probably best known for his long-running kids show Lunch With Soupy Sales, where he originated what would become his calling card — the pie-throwing gag. He later hosted the Soupy Sales Show, which ran for 13 years in cities throughout the country and overseas. From 1968-’75 he was a regular panelist on the syndicated game show What’s My Line? and appeared on several other TV game shows. During the 1980s he hosted his own show on WNBC-AM in New York City. After being conspicuously absent from the radio airwaves for nearly nine years, the Joe & Scott Morning Show returned last spring and rocketed to the top of the Arbitron ratings.
The pair first teamed up in May 1995, broadcasting on 100.7 WZXL from Wildwood. In January 1998, Equity Communications purchased WZXL and relocated it to its current Bayport One location on the Black Horse Pike in West Atlantic City.
Joe and Scott broke up in 2000 and seemed content to have settled into new career pursuits, but their fondness for live morning-drive radio led them back down the same road-once-traveled. In 2008 they approached Equity Communications about reuniting and recreating the chemistry that was the hallmark of the Joe and Scott team. The duo was re-hired in April and, after the Spring 2009 Arbitron ratings were released, ranked at the top of the morning ratings with their core demographic — men between the ages of 25 and 54. Allen Checks In

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

As the big-haired half of the famed Allen & Rossi comedy act, Marty Allen is probably still a household name among those old enough to remember when standup routines did not get more risqué than this: “If a guy talks dirty to a girl it’s sexual harassment. If a girl talks dirty to a guy it’s $3.99 a minute.” Allen, now 87 but still performing standup, recently checked in with AC Weekly publisher Lew Steiner, whom he got to know through regular standup acts in A.C. casinos over the years. Perhaps known best for perpetual appearances on the Hollywood Squares, the Ed Sullivan Show and for his catch phrase “Hello Dere,” Allen and his current partner, pianist-singer Karon Kate Blackwell — also his wife of 25 years, completed a series of shows at nightclubs in New York and New Jersey earlier this month before setting sail from New York City on Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines. “We’re favorites with the cruise lines,” Allen tells Steiner in a hand-written letter (who still does that these days?) following their recent phone conversation. “We work clean and have an act that entertains and never offends.” Generally, according to a glowing review in the Las Vegas Sun that Allen included with the letter, Blackwell opens their show with her golden voice before serving as a sort of straight man for Allen when he does his standup. An excerpt from the article notes: “What a contrast. Blackwell: tall, shapely, groomed. Allen: short, shapeless, perpetually disheveled and still sporting the trademark haircut that apparently was inspired by contact with an electrical outlet when he was a young man.” According to Allen’s Web site, the couple will be performing on different Royal Caribbean Cruise Line ships from last September through mid-December. If you plan to take to the high seas soon, maybe you can check them out. (more…)

YouTube Pick of the Day

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

We’ve been cracking up at the various YouTube clips featuring comedian Dave Attell (interviewed in this week’s coming issue and doing a show at Borgata this weekend), but couldn’t find one without any profanity. Since this is a family site, we offer this great clip courtesy of the late great comedian Mitch Hedberg, filming backstage during a high school stop on tour with Lewis Black and Attell.
