AC Weekly Interviews Miss New Jersey and Miss New York at The Pier Shops
Atlantic City Weekly publisher Lew Steiner had the opportunity to interview Miss New Jersey 2013 Cara McCollum and Miss New York 2013 Nina Davuluri at a special event hosted at The Pier Shops at Caesars on Thursday, Sept. 5.
The event included the grand opening of the Miss America Store, which features an array of pageant apparel, cosmetics, artwork and references to some of the show’s history in Atlantic City.
Cara McCollum is from Margate and will be a senior English major at Princeton. Her platform during the Miss America competition is Giving the Gift of Reading and her talent is piano. “I’ve always been passionate about books and like to share that with the younger generations,” said McCollum, who said she’s thrilled to have the competition back in her home state.
“I think New Jerseyans needed this both for the economy and the morale,” she said, “and, hey, it’s not bad not having to pack 50 pounds or lighter on the airport luggage.”
Nina Davuluri graduated from the University of Michigan and is currently in the process of applying to medical school. Hailing from Syracuse, New York, her platform is Celebrating Diversity Through Cultural Competency.
“We’re making history this year and the community of Atlantic City has been so welcoming, so warm, so inviting,” Davuluri tells AC Weekly “They’re treating us like royalty. Atlantic City really rolled out the red carpet for us and treated us like celebrities. It’s been awesome.”
