The United Way’s Thanks for Giving Day was a great success, co-sponsored by United Way and Tanger Outlets The Walk. A $3000 shopping spree was donated by The Walk to kickoff the Winter Apparel clothing drive that continues through Dec. 21 at Tanger Outlets The Walk.

In the past 2 years, the Monday before Thanksgiving has been the day the United Way said thank you to some local United Way supporters. Ten winners, five shopping sprees and 30 seconds of pure shopping bliss at Tanger Outlets The Walk were the highlights of a day dedicated to saying thank you to local donors.

In light of recent events, this year’s Thanks for Giving Day had one important addition. In response to the needs emerging from Hurricane Sandy, United Way and Tanger Outlets The Walk with the support of thousands of local donors, had a kickoff Winter Apparel Drive at Tanger Outlets The Walk as part of Thanks for Giving Day on Monday, Nov. 19. Items include coats, hats, gloves, scarves and boots, which will be distributed to local families affected by Hurricane Sandy through The Salvation Army.

Atlantic County’s 2012 General Campaign Chairman and Atlantic City Electric President Vince Maione along with Ann Arena, Atlantic County’s local Operating Board Chair and Director of Merchandise Management Systems for Spence Gifts LLC, were on hand to thank donors and help shop for the drive at Columbia Sportswear. Columbia has already  committed an entire box full of winter-wear for the drive.

“Collectively, we all came together and said ‘how can we make this event help?’ said John Emge, Executive Director of United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey in Atlantic and Cape May Counties. “Thanks for Giving Day is a day of appreciation for our donors. Yet the feedback we received from our campaign chairs and volunteers is that these individuals had already planned to shop for local families in need if they won a spree. It’s this powerful generosity that exists in our community that will enable us to emerge from this disaster even stronger, more united.”

Tanger Outlets will continue the winter apparel drive through December 21 at Shopper Services located at 2014 Baltic Ave. (next to T-Mobile). The hours are Monday through Saturday from 10am to 8pm and Sunday from 10am to 6pm. Several stores have already begun donating items including Nike Factory Outlet, Reebok Outlet, Maidenform Outlet, and Tanger’s Management Office.
