Lucy’s 131st Birthday Celebration Postponed to Sunday, July 22
MARGATE, N.J. — Due to impending storms and uncertain weather conditions, Lucy the Elephant, one of southern New Jersey’s most famed National Historic Landmarks, will have to wait one more day to celebrate her 131st birthday party. The party is postponed from Saturday, July 21, to Sunday, July 22. 
“We have too much time and money invested in Lucy’s birthday to take a chance and let the weather ruin it,” says Lucy’s executive director Rich Helfant. “Lucy’s birthday will now be celebrated on Sunday, July 22, from 10am to 8pm.”
Joining in this year’s celebration is the Zoo on Wheels, the traveling component from the Philadelphia Zoo. Lucy’s friends from the animal kingdom will be on hand from 11am to 1pm. Also part of the fun will be a giant water slide, an 18-foor bungee run, a birthday cake bounce, dunk tank, and a junior sports game.
AC Photo of Linwood will be setting up a special photo booth where visitors will be able to have a commemorative photo taken of them with Lucy. No birthday party would be complete without hotdogs, soda, Philly soft pretzels, popcorn, cotton candy, snow cones, peanuts, and of course, birthday cake.
Parking can sometimes be challenging at Lucy, so organizers have arranged to open the playground at Union Avenue School as a remote parking facility. The playground is located on Union Avenue between Winchester and Monmouth avenues. A complimentary shuttle, furnished by the Atlantic City Jitney Association, will be running every 15 minutes between the playground and Lucy from 10am to 8pm.
A limited number of special collector’s t-shirts featuring the “GO NUTS” theme will be sold for $15. And visitors can enter a chance to win a giant Faberge’ egg featuring Lucy.
Evelyn Johnson of Cape May Court House, author of Lucy’s official bedtime storybooks, will be on hand to sign copies of her highly acclaimed children’s books from 10am to 4pm. Tours through the World’s Largest Elephant will be offered every half hour.
