As my cat Jordi stayed huddled in the bathroom at 1:30am Saturday morning while I observed the “wrath of God” winds that were blowing, it occurred to me that Jordi had the right idea.

We’ve known about hurricanes and twisters, but had you ever heard of a “super derecho?” Me either. Well now I can can I’ve been through a super derecho, not that I’m bragging about it. Winds were recorded as gusting up to 81mph in Tuckerton, and a news story explained that the derecho was caused by, “a rip in the jet stream.”

The next morning as I drove to my job to see if they had power (they didn’t), I found myself taking several detours to avoid tree-blocked streets and major roads with no lights and realized the extent of the damage. I didn’t find electricity until I hit Ventnor Ave. in Ventnor and Margate where it appeared to be business as usual. The casinos also had juice.

As of Monday, I still have no power, and it sounds like the 100,000 like myself still without power are going to have to wait until the end of the week.

I was very happy to find out that Bayport One had electricity. My job — with air conditioning — never looked to good.

Here are a few pictures of the destruction.
