New Van Morrison, Bob Dylan Albums Coming This Fall

Van Morrison 2012Although Bob Dylan’s record company Sony/Columbia has been mostly hush-hush on 71-year-old Bob Dylan’s new studio record, it has been confirmed that a fall release is scheduled, and that Dylan recorded songs for his follow-up to 2009’s Together Through Life earlier this year in California.

(Dylan’s holiday charity effort, Christmas in the Heart, was also released in 2009.)

Sources at Dylan’s record company tell AC Weekly more information about the new album is expected to be “released soon.” All that has been out there — for a few months now — is an interview with Los Lobos’ David Hidalgo from March 9, who told a Colorado newspaper that he had been recording with Dylan.

From the Aspen Times article:

David Hidalgo recently finished recording sessions for a new Bob Dylan album, at Jackson Browne’s Los Angeles studio. Hidalgo, who has played on two previous Dylan albums, wasn’t expecting to add his Mexican instruments to the new project. But there were Mexican instruments around the studio, and Hidalgo, who grew up in a Mexican-American environment in East L.A., was as attracted to the accordion, and the tres — a guitar-like instrument whose six strings are separated into three groups of two — as he was to the electric guitar when he was a kid. Dylan heard those sounds, and welcomed them into his music.

“He’d say, ‘Wow, what’s that?’” Hidalgo said from a tour stop in Fort Collins. “He liked the sound. So we’d get it in there.”

Hidalgo appreciated Dylan’s embrace of the Mexican sounds. But he has an even bigger appreciation of Dylan’s outlook on music generally. The recording session, he said, was nothing like the earlier ones he had done with Dylan.

“It was a great experience. And different. Each one has been different, all completely different approaches. It’s an amazing thing, how he keeps creativity. I don’t see how he does it.”

On the other hand, it has been officially announced that fellow bard Van Morrison, who turns 67 Aug. 31, will be releasing his first new studio album since 2008 in October with Born to Sing: No Plan B.

The set is due Oct. 2 on the Blue Note label. The track listing is as follows:

1.  Open The Door (To Your Heart) 2.  Going Down To Monte Carlo 3.  Born To Sing 4.  End Of The Rainbow 5.  Close Enough For Jazz 6.  Mystic Of The East 7.  Retreat And View 8.  If In Money We Trust 9.  Pagan Heart 10.  Educating Archie

Hopefully, both Van the Man and Dylan will return to Atlantic City. They have each played the Borgata and Trump Taj Mahal in recent years.

As of now Dylan has a late-summer U.S. tour scheduled with no shows slated for New Jersey as of yet. He starts a European tour June 30 after more than a month of the road for a change.
