Looking Beyond Natural Gas

B.L. England Generating Station in Beesley’s Point
Ocean City and residents of other Cape May County municipalities can now breath a sigh of relief knowing that the B.L. England Generating Station in Beesley’s Point will be converted from coal-and-oil power to natural gas in an effort to reduce the plant’s noxious emissions.
However, the environmental group Citizens for Renewable Energy (CURE) believes that there are even more environmentally friendly ways to operate the power-generating facility. Jim Walsh, eastern regional director of food and water watch, will lead with his knowledge of the “fracking” process and its effects. Fracking is the hydraulic fracturing of underground shale to extract natural gas.
Long Beach Island writer John W. Petralia will be in attendance to discuss wind energy as a viable alternative fuel. The presentation is scheduled for Saturday June 2, at 1pm. This event is free and will be held at the Bayside Center, 520 Bay Ave, Ocean City. For more information, call (609) 442-2407. — Shana Vanegas
