Online registration is up and running for the 24th Annual Irish Pub Tour de Shore —  a 65-mile charity bike ride happening Sunday, July 31. The tour starts at the Irish Pub in Philadelphia and ends with a large celebration at the Irish Pub in Atlantic City. Click here for details of the tour.

What began with about two dozen riders 24 years ago is expected to top out around 1,300 this year. The riders are a cross-section of the young and middle-aged, male and female, black and white, experienced and not-so-experienced. Over the years, the tour has raised more than $1.4 million for numerous children and police charities, including the Daniel Faulkner Educational Fund, the FOP Survivors Fund, the South Jersey Fraternal Order of Police, and the Police Athletic League of Philadelphia.

This year’s route will go across the Ben Franklin Bridge, wind along County Route 561, and pass through the southern New Jersey towns of Berlin, Hammonton, Egg Harbor City and Absecon before ending at the Atlantic City Irish Pub. For inexperienced cyclinsts the ride is a challenge, but a few weeks of training can make the journey more enjoyable and the payoff enormous.

“I’ll never forget the feel of jumping into the Atlantic Ocean or that first sip of a cold beer,” says participant Michael Smerconish. “Completing the trek always leaves me physically drained but mentally invigorated with the knowledge that I’ve played a small role in raising money for a worthy cause. I hope you join Team Smerconish this year and carve out a small role of your own.”

Team Smerconish has worked out a special arrangement with the Irish Pub. Team Smerconish participants will have their entire registration fee (a $10 entry fee before June 1, $20 after June 1, plus a minimum of $150 in support contributions) go toward the Irish Pub Children’s Foundation, and will receive a special Team Smerconish riding jersey to wear on the tour.

“[The Irish Pub Foundation] is a fantastic non-profit administered by my friends at the Irish Pub, and dedicated to raising funds for Philadelphia-based children and police-related charitable endeavors,” says Smerconish.
