DJ AM Found Dead

Friday, August 28th, 2009

DJ AM (Adam Goldstein), co-owner of the new nightclub Dusk, at Caesars, has been found dead in his NY apartment. He was 36, and the NY Post has reported that drug paraphernalia was found near the body. Goldstein survived a plane crash last year.

UPDATE 8/30: The club was open Saturday night with a long line of hipsters waiting to get in the club around 10pm. Also, a blogger’s (and DJ Premier’s) take along with great AM vid clips.

People: Travis Barker struggles through Blink 182 set after friend’s death.

Philly.com’s: A.D. Amorosi’s take.

DJ AM won an award at this past year’s inaugural Reader’s Choice Nightlife Awards, as best guest DJ at Borgata.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Goldstein’s family.

Keeping Up With Brody…

Friday, August 28th, 2009

He may be best known as stepbrother of the Kardashian sisters — Kim, Kourtney and Khloe — but Brody Jenner has recently been getting his own name out there. Brody, who only modestly appears on the hit E! reality show Keeping up with the Kardashians — he’s Bruce Jenner’s son — is now making public appearances of his own, including a birthday bash in honor of his 26th birthday on Friday, Aug. 28,, at Tropicana’s Providence nightclub in Atlantic City.

Brody is still scheduled to host the Providence party despite having his appendix removed on Aug. 22, the day of his actual birthday. He isn’t giving any interviews, but if he is half as upbeat and energetic as he appears on TV, Brody should be back on his feet and ready to party Friday night!

What makes Brody so appealing? Well, aside from the fact that he’s tall, dark and handsome, he appears to be more in touch with reality than some other stars out there and doesn’t take himself too seriously.  He has been featured in modeling ads for Guess as well as the summer 2009 OPI clothing campaign. While he has appeared on the MTV show The Hills, Brody now has his own reality show entitled Bromance on the same channel. Brody, who is looking for a “true” friend, shows the possible contestants vying for his friendship how the other half live. He takes the guys on yachting vacations and gives them a glimpse of his own life, straight from the pages of a glossy magazine. Still, Brody appears fun-loving and unfazed by his own fame.

Whether he’s on the small screen or the center of a photo shoot, the Kardashian stepbrother is gaining momentum as a star in his own right. His seemingly down-to-earth demeanor has made him out to be more of a good boy on the Hollywood scene. Still, even this laid back hotshot has become known as a ladies’ man around town, with hook-ups including Laguna Beach reality stars Lauren Conrad and Kristin Cavallari, in addition to Nicole Richie. Brody is currently linked to Jayde Nicole, Playboy’s 2008 Playmate of the Year.

With Brody’s good looks and charisma, don’t be surprised if we see another show out soon: Keeping up with Brody. — Julie Sagoskin

Stockton Starts Homeland Security Program

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey has announced the development of a new Certificate Program in Homeland Security. The 130-hour program is a blended format that utilizes online and classroom-based instruction.

“The blended format is well-suited for working professionals,” says Cynthia Sosnowski, executive director of continuing studies for health sciences and human services. “Participants will engage in classroom-based learning once every six weeks and further their study through interactive online instruction between classroom sessions.”

The program begins Friday, Oct. 2. Veterans may be eligible to receive funding for the training through a special program made available through the Atlantic Cape Workforce Investment Board.

“The availability of training dollars for our veterans will allow them to have access to a program that will build on the skills they acquired during military service,” says Sosnowski.

The program was designed to help meet the need for better infrastructure protection and emergency management.

“This program will give members of the law enforcement, emergency services, veterans, corporate and public health communities the tools they need to prepare and respond to domestic and foreign threats against our homeland, and to respond in emergency situations, whether natural or manmade,” says Lt. Col. Mark Anarumo, visiting associate professor of criminal justice at Stockton College.

Michael Vick’s Eagles Debut

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

No matter how shocked and horrified I was when the Eagles signed Michael Vick, I am interested to see him make his debut tonight. The Eagles organization put a huge bull’s-eye on its back when they signed Vick. Will it be worth all the bad press? Could it ever be worth the aggravation, no matter how well in plays?

I think it is interesting that NBC Sports director Dick Ebersol, who employs Tony Dungy, felt it was necessary to say that Dungy’s role as mentor to Michael Vick will be curtailed now that the quarterback has signed with the Eagles. Why announce that? Why not just do it quietly, unless there is some concern that Dungy needs to distance himself from Vick?

My stance outside of football remains that Vick has to demonstrate that he will work with the Humane Society of the United States and hopefully make an impact when it comes to the issue of dog fighting, which is so prevalent in Philadelphia and Camden. However, I’m still not sure that Vick’s jail time and acts of contrition will have as much of an impact in the dog-fighting community as the fact that the Eagles gave him a job and are going to pay him $1.6 million.

I wish I could watch tonight’s pre-season game with the Jaguars and only be thinking about football and what my team needs to do to show it is ready for the season. However, ever since the Vick signing, football readiness has taken a back seat to the controversy. I hope that will change as the season approaches.
