Absecon Lighthouse Hosts Amateur Radio Days

The Absecon Lighthouse will be hosting Amateur Radio Demonstration Days on Saturday and Sunday, August 1-2, and Saturday and Sunday, August 15-16. The first weekend is sponsored by the Amateur Radio Lighthouse Society, and the second by the Radio Society of Great Britain.
The Southern Counties Amateur Radio Association is conducting both ham radio events and dedicating them to Jack E. Boucher, who supervised the state’s Historic Preservation Program and conceived the initial preservation efforts for Absecon Lighthouse in 1964. The radio demonstrations will operate between 10am and 4pm each of the four days.
Folks young and old wishing to try their hand at high frequency, long-distance communication are welcome to visit and will be invited to participate using a mode of voice communication pre-dating the Internet by 80 years. Amateur radio operators have been instrumental in providing emergency communications in times of disaster. This activity is free to the public, however, donations are welcome, as the Lighthouse is a non-profit entity operating to preserve this historical beacon and provide education programs for children. The Lighthouse will be open for visitors and climbers all day from 10am to 5pm.
