Top 40 Under 40 Party Pics!

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Friday’s Top 40 Under 40 Party held at Borgata’s mixx nightclub was a blast. Extended thanks go out from the Atlantic City Weekly, Review Publishing and the Greater Atlantic City region Jaycees to the friends and families of the honorees who came out to party. Special thanks to AC Mayor Scott Evans and other local dignitaries who either stopped by or presented proclamations to the Top 40. And again, thanks to the Borgata and mixx for hosting such an amazing event.

Without further adieu, here are some photos from the party courtesy of shutterbug Nick Valinote:

Idol Results

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

Somehow little Ramiele didn’t even make it into the bottom three this week as Chikezie was sent home. Kristy Lee Cook’s choice of song, “God Bless the USA,” kept her in the running. Surprisingly enough, the Idol voters decided it was time for one of the top vote getters to sweat a little bit this week, as Jason Castro’s lackluster performance landed him in the bottom three. Syesha Mercado, who’s also been among the top performers and was terrific this week, also landed in the bottom three.
Ramiele is a much better singer than the Idol formerly known as Sanjaya, but she has inherited his sympathy votes, as she keeps hanging on despite being the weakest link.
Dolly Parton is in the house next week, so KLC probably makes it through.

A Helpful Book

CompleteDiabetesWEB.jpg
Reading The Complete Diabetes Lifestyle by Donna Kay with Maribeth Stephens brought me back to that moment when I found out I had Type 2 diabetes five years ago. When you don’t have a family history of the disease, you don’t really know much about it. Your mind starts racing. In my case, when my eye doctor suggested my cataracts at age 48 might be from diabetes, I walked out of his office on a cold but sunny winter day and burst into tears.
Donna Kay had similar thoughts — I’m too young. My family doesn’t have diabetes. Why me? — which she has written about in her excellent primer book for diabetics. Newly diagnosed diabetics, especially those without any in-family experience, are looking for information, first and foremost, and The Complete Diabetes Lifestyle provides a ton of good basic information.

Idol Rewind

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

AmericanIdolDCookWEB.jpgAs the American Idol contest has continued, the experience of the more veteran performers has pushed adorable David A. out of the top spot in my personal top ten.
When David Cook unleashed his slowed down and soulful interpretation of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” a star was born, even if he did borrow the slowed-down “BJ” from Chris Cornell. Yes, I can imagine buying a record from, David Cook; I might even purchase the download right after I write this love letter to the talent that is DC.
As for the other David, Archuleta, he still is demonstrating his considerable chops and charisma, but his performances have been getting worse, not better. He hit his peak three weeks ago with his beautiful interpretation of “Imagine.” Last night he selected an obscure song that was vintage “Up With People” corny, “You’re the Voice.” Even Paula scolded him for playing it safe.
Michael Johns, 29, finally nailed a song that showed that his good looks are part of a package that includes potent pipes. I didn’t understand how he skated by earlier, but his “We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions” took that song out of sports arenas and into our hearts.

Bracket Busting in Tampa

Monday, March 24th, 2008

When I told my Mom I was trying to win a 52” flat-screen TV by picking the winners in an NCAA bracket contest, she immediately said, “But where are we going to put it?” You’ve gotta love a mom that immediately assumes you might win.
I knew I wasn’t going to win, but I didn’t expect to have my bracket selections blown up this early. Thing is, I can’t complain too much. As a fan I loved watching Davidson, and the remarkable Stephen Curry, ruin Georgetown and Roy Hibbert’s day with that amazing comeback. His dad, NBA three-point whiz Del Curry, used to come to town and kill the Sixers, and Stephen Curry has inherited his dad’s shooting skills and a lot more.
Villanova was so inconsistent this year, I couldn’t bring myself to pick them to upset Clemson in most of my six entries in various contests. I did pick them in one bracket contest, and I even picked Siena in that same bracket. ‘Nova won’t beat Kansas (Friday in the 9:40pm game), but Scottie Reynolds and Co. will give them a good game.
Oh, well, time is see where my best bracket so far, 36-12, has put me in the standings.
